Pitchfork and IQ and Other Findings

As keen forkologists, we go in quest of  getting more information about the pitchwork for the museum, and our first results… look promising:  pitchfork and elegance, pitchfork and IQ… look at our sample collection of sayings, proverbs and quotations (and feel free to send us some more, thanks!)

PITCHFORK AND WEATHER
Heavy rain? Need  to describe that the water is coming down in torrents? Depends on whereabouts you are! "It's raining cats and dogs" (heard e.g. in England), or "it's raining old women" (e.g. in Wales), or "it's  raining buckets"  or " IT'S RAINING PITCHFORKS" (where? you can hear this at various places where horses live!)

 PITCHFORK AND ELEGANCE
... "She wears her clothes as if they were thrown on with a pitchfork." (a book by Jonathan Swift. I love it!)

PITCHFORK AND THE WAY YOU EAT
“It's coarse and ungraceful to throw food into the mouth as you would toss hay into a barn with a pitchfork.”

PITCHFORK AND BEAUTY
…"He looks like his face caught fire and someone put it out with a pitchfork." (can be heard in the south of the USA about a person who is ugly)

PITCHFORK AND SMILE
"Ale zes zablysnal jak widly w gnoju." (Poland), which in English would be "You shine like a pitchfork stuck in manure" but the one used in Moravian Haná is "Svítíš jak měsíček na hnoji" (using the same shine but replacing the pitchfork with the Moon…why?)

PITCHFORK AND  FUTURE
"Written with a pitchfork on water" (means that a statement about the future is not certain, not written in stone). Probably originating from Russia.

PITCHFORK AND WORK
"Neem nooit teveel hooi op je vork. (Dutch proverb). English: "Don't take too much hay on your pitchfork" or "Don't bite off more than you can chew."

PITCHFORK AND IQ
"Not the sharpest pitchfork in the barn (meaning: not too bright). This is No. 149 in the  "Not too bright list"  http://dan.hersam.com/lists/not_bright.html

(My favourite one)
"The difference between Heaven and Hell is which end of the pitchfork you're on." - Rev. Sheldon DeWehr

(My favourite one, too)
"Naturam expelles furca, tamen usque recurret… (Horace, Epistles I ) "You may drive out nature with a pitchfork, but she keeps on coming back." (very true, isn't it?) (in Czech: "žeň čerta oknem ven, vrátí se dveřmi…(just drive out devil instead of the nature").

Other Proverbs with Fork

" Five fingers hold more than two forks." (German proverb)

" If it were ever to rain soup, the poor would only have forks." (Brazilian proverb)

"There is no loaded cart which could not carry one more forkful." (Hungarian proverb)
